KAMPALA — Uganda's political landscape was thrown into fresh turmoil on Monday after Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba shared a photograph appearing to show opposition leader and lawyer Erias Lukwago in detention, hours after he was reportedly seized from his home in a dramatic military operation.
The image, accompanied by the statement, "He (Lukwago) has been fighting me with Besigye for many decades. We are going to finish it now," quickly went viral and sparked fierce debate across the country.
Lukwago, the president of the People's Front for Freedom (PFF) and one of the lead lawyers representing veteran opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye, was reportedly arrested from his residence in Wakaliga, Kampala, by armed men dressed in military uniforms.
According to PFF Secretary General Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda, the arrest occurred just hours before Lukwago was expected to serve court papers on Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba in a case linked to Besigye's alleged abduction from Nairobi, Kenya, in November 2024.
Speaking during a press briefing in Kampala, Ssemujju alleged that Lukwago's arrest was directly connected to the planned legal action against the military chief.
"Dr Besigye wants the court to deal with Muhoozi Kainerugaba and two other soldiers. They are the ones who kidnapped him from Kenya. Lukwago was preparing to serve him court papers this morning
